Why check?

Depending on settings, phone cameras record the shooting location inside the file. Sending or posting the original can reveal places you photograph often, such as home, school or work. Whether a service removes this on upload varies, so it is safest to check before sending the original.

Removing the location

Choose a photo on this page and make a new file to remove location, capture time and device metadata. The original stays unchanged. Re-encoding JPEG and WebP may change quality and file size; large photos are reduced to at most 12 million pixels. Visible content such as faces and plates is not removed.

To stop recording locations in future photos, turn off location tags (save location) in your camera settings. Menu names vary by device.

What is and is not checked

The checker reads complete JPEG, PNG and WebP files up to 20MiB and inspects supported EXIF fields for GPS coordinates, capture time and device name. XMP, text, additional EXIF directories or a truncated file produce an unknown result when inspection cannot be completed. Other formats such as HEIC and visible clues such as signs or views are not checked. "No GPS coordinates were found in the checked EXIF" is not a guarantee that all location information is absent. This tool does not decode the image or verify the integrity of every metadata field.
